“We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life …
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.” Romans 6: 4, 11-13
“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3: 27
Just as God wiped out sinful people from the earth by the flood (Genesis 5 to 9), so was our sinful nature wiped out clean by the gracious flood of baptism in Christ’s death for the forgiveness of our sins. Noah came out of the Ark alive with his family to start a new life of service to God and to renew the world to God’s glory. But this did not last, and the old world of sin was back quickly. We died with Christ to sin, to the old world, to our old way of living and we come out of the tomb alive with Him. Now that we are alive, we are called to live a new life. For just as water gives life to everything on earth, the grace-filled water of baptism gives us life with God. The Israelites crossed through the water of the sea and miraculously came out alive on the other side (see book of Exodus). They were baptized in the sea (1 Corinthians 10:2). Pharaoh and his armies were submerged and dead forever. But they came out alive on the other side and left behind their old lives of slavery and suffering. We come out alive of baptism on the right side of eternity, pulled out from our slavery to sin under the sad tyranny of the devil. We now live our new life of service to God as His free and beloved children! We are baptized in Christ’s resurrection indeed! We have put on Christ as our vestment, as our forgiveness, life and salvation!
My dear friends, since we are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, let us be clothed with Christ, with God. And let us not resist the work of the Holy Spirit in us. Our old mortal ways too often come back just like they did for the Israelites who wandered in the desert 40 years because of it. Feed daily on Christ and His Words of life and don’t go back to our old slavery. The joy and peace we have in Christ by the Holy Spirit is infinitely worth more than all the false pleasures of this world. Love for God and others, being like Christ, our God and Saviour, is the goal of our very existence. All the goals of our earthly lives will pass. But the fact that we have put on Christ, our God in baptism will remain forever. For He is alive forever, and we live in Him forever. Sharing in His divine nature is the meaning of our life (2 Peter 1:3-4); it is the life that lasts. Becoming like God, becoming the true children of our heavenly Father, children of the divine light in Christ is the meaning of our baptism in Christ’s resurrection.
May His Spirit have free course in our hearts and lives.
Christ is risen! Amen. Alleluia!
